Marie Khoury was only 25 when, 13 years ago, she opened Livingston’s Pink Jewels. After teaching school for one year, she’d realized it was not for her. Coming from a family of business owners, who were very supportive of her, she weighed the risks and the benefits—and created the “lifestyle boutique,” which carries jewelry, clothing, bags, home decor and gifts.
“The retail industry was mostly older, so my youth was a little bit of an obstacle,” she said. Knowing how she liked to be treated when walking into a store, she incorporated those feelings into designing a welcoming, warm—but not pushy—atmosphere that customers immediately responded to.
“Shopping should be fun,” says Marie. “Treat everyone with respect. And remember that you don’t know everything. Listen to your customers and staff,” she added. She finds that this business model generates an energy which makes people want to return.
